Close Quarters (CQB) for Home Defense, Level 1
Individual Movement and Room-Clearing Fundamentals
4 hours — Develop the awareness, movement skills and decision making needed to navigate a potential home-defense emergency with greater confidence.
Although Close Quarters Battle (CQB) is traditionally associated with military and law enforcement training, its core principles can help responsible civilians improve their home-defense planning, family communication, and emergency response strategies.
This foundational CQB course introduces students to the fundamentals of safely moving through confined spaces and residential structures. Through instructor demonstrations, dry practice, and low-risk drills using inert training aids, participants learn how to recognize hazards, limit unnecessary exposure, and make safer decisions under pressure.
PREREQUISITES: None, but we strongly recommend Defensive Handgun or Defensive Rifle (preferably both) as muzzle discipline will be strictly enforced.
CQB for Home Defense, Level 2
Team Movement and Room-Clearing Fundamentals
4 hours — This hands-on course introduces movement through confined spaces and structures with a spouse, partner, or family member.
Through instructor demonstrations, dry practice, and low-risk training drills, students will develop practical strategies for navigating rooms, communicating clearly, identifying potential hazards, and making responsible decisions during stressful situations.
This course is ideal for couples, partners, and responsible homeowners who want to improve their home-defense plan, family communication, and ability to respond calmly during a potential emergency.
Utah laws relevant to self and home defense will be discussed to help participants develop a more informed and responsible approach to emergency planning.
PREREQUISITES: CQB for Home Defense Level 1. We also strongly recommend Defensive Handgun or Defensive Rifle (preferably both) as muzzle discipline will be strictly enforced.
CQB for Home Defense, Level 3
Target Identification and Engagement: Finding and Dealing with Threats
4 hours — Learn situational awareness, target identification, responsible decision-making, and practice distinguishing threats from non-threats in varied visibility conditions.
Level 3 focuses on situational awareness: keeping track of the training environment, recalling areas already encountered, and recognizing the presence of team members, family members, animals, and other potential hazards.
Participants study target identification in daylight, low-light, darkness, and no-light conditions. Training scenarios emphasize careful observation and important shoot vs don’t shoot decisions, including awareness of obscured or unseen areas and items that may affect how a situation is assessed.
Scenarios include working individually and in teams, and progresses through exercises involving one to three rooms, three to six rooms, and seven to ten rooms. Participants will address targets with their airsoft firearms, and will receive ‘scores’ based on target accuracy. The debrief will include a review of the skills practiced, and identify areas for improvement.
PREREQUISITES: CQB for Home Defense Level 2. We also strongly recommend Defensive Handgun or Defensive Rifle (preferably both) as muzzle discipline will be strictly enforced.
CQB for Home Defense, Level 4
Force on Force: Identifying Non-Threats and Engaging Hostiles
4 hours — Put everything you've learned in levels 1-3 to the test with the new complexity of a live ‘threat’ that you have to find and engage within a controlled training environment. Learn how to deal with another person that moves and shoots back at you.
Scenario-based training using supervised force-on-force scenarios. Beginning with a review of prior courses, students will focus awareness and orientation in a simulated environment while accounting for people, animals, exits, and potential hazards.
Students will assess threats using visual and auditory information, work on target identification in shifting light conditions while distinguishing threats from non-threats and making responsible shoot or don’t shoot decisions; scenarios will include the added complexity of a live target that ‘fights back’.
Scenarios will increase in complexity, involving multiple rooms and team members. A scenario debrief will be conducted to consider participants’ decisions—including justification for shots and non-shots.
PREREQUISITES: CQB for Home Defense Level 3. We also strongly recommend Defensive Handgun or Defensive Rifle (preferably both) as muzzle discipline will be strictly enforced.
